”No one leaves a man like me” said Picasso, finding it heard to believe that Françoise Gilot actually left him. In this painting from  the same year, his threatening shadow is cast over a woman lying on a sofa. He may be trying to keep her in her place, but it is clear that a shadow has no real power to control or do harm.
