The artist enters into an ambivalent dialogue, demonstrating both conviction and skepticism, with his Catholic faith. Turning the Last Supper black sends a message of interracial and cross-cultural equality; the technique that he uses – submerging a relief of the scene in water and photographing the indistinct result – transforms it into a fragment of memory that appears to be disintegrating.
